In 2019, netizens circulated a call for the team to change their name to the Grand Junction Chubs, with an intention to play on the term's slang meaning in Urban Dictionary. The team at the time reacted strongly, calling the suggestion "offensive" and a "sexual term."
However, time has changed everything. The Grand Junction Jackalopes, with new management, have shown they not only have a good memory but also a sense of humor. This 2025 season, the team announced they will play every Wednesday as the Humpback Chubs, a tribute to the endangered fish species in the Colorado River region.
Humpback Chubs: More Than Just a Name
The Humpback Chub is an endangered native fish of the Colorado River, especially prevalent in the Grand Valley. This fish has a distinctive feature: a prominent hump behind its head. The Jackalopes explained that using this name is not only symbolic but also a way to raise awareness about environmental conservation.
Jackalopes President Harrison Shapiro shared, "We have heard the grassroots support for the Chubs, and we are very proud to announce this for the 2025 season. While it's a fun name with a deep connection to the Grand Valley, we are most proud of being able to have a small part in helping to conserve the natural beauty of this place we call home."
To add meaning to this event, after the final Wednesday game of the season, the Jackalopes will auction off the Humpback Chubs jerseys, with 50% of the proceeds donated to a scholarship fund supporting local students involved in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Humpback Chub recovery program.
