The “Make Tokyo Great Again” hat is more than a simple villain – it is a cultural and political statement. Inspired by Donald Trump’s famous “Make America Great Again” slogan, the Tokyo version has caused controversy – especially when it is associated with nativism and nationalism.

While the dialogue may seem humorous or simply a fashion statement, the hat reflects a broader trend in the region: the spread of right-wing ideology. The slogan was used by Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko during her election campaign, the tempo of which is “putting Tokyo first”, a clear variation on the “America First” slogan.

The popularity of the symbol in South Korea and now Japan demonstrates the global cultural influence of American political symbols – whether supportive or critical. It is no surprise that the hat has received mixed reactions, becoming a hot point of debate between free speech and conservatism.
